Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying such treatments should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
