Resurgent Medvedev Claims First Title in 882 Days
19 of the Russian's 21 championships have been earned on hard surfaces
A comeback Daniil Medvedev secured his initial title for nearly 30 months with success over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.
The athlete, a former world number one, has endured a challenging period, achieving just a single victory at the big events and experiencing a difficult moment at the New York tournament.
The player's varied form on the professional circuit - and issues with his serving in specific - led to him falling of the world's top 10 and eventually splitting with long-time mentor Gilles Cervara.
Presently training with his coach and Goetzke, the tennis star has steadily advanced in the last few weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought competitive win over Frenchman Moutet.
It is the player's initial trophy since the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hard court from that period of the previous year.
Victory also indicates the Russian has secured twenty-one titles at twenty-one different tournaments.
"It's the first time I'm at a competition with my two daughters at once, so to win a championship is really nice," stated world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.
"This championship is in dedication of my second daughter my daughter, because the initial championship I achieved when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."
Medvedev, the past champion, had lost his past six championship matches, including in that event in the past months.
Medvedev's counter-punching strategy and regular outbursts on the playing surface had caused commentators to question if his capacity to perform at the elite level was finished.
Yet the player has made changes in the last few weeks, striving to approach the net and compete positively, backed up by an improved serving game.
Medvedev fought back from a disadvantage in the first set against the challenging Frenchman, winning 4 of the final five exchanges to take the lead.
The pair exchanged service breaks in the following set before Moutet, bidding for his first professional championship, took control to push for a decider.
Moutet defended 4 initial opportunities in a competitive deciding set before Medvedev won the break to 15 to secure the win.
Suitably, he earned victory with a point at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to control a volley after a lengthy match.
