Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue
Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
